They say that you only miss something when it is gone but in my case, it is only when i saw, heard and felt it again that I realized how much i miss it. In the 11 months that I'm here in LA, it never EVER rained, until last Friday, that is.
I was in the last 15 minutes of my yoga class when i smelled that distinctive scent of rain. I can't quite say what the smell is but it was this pleasant, earthy aroma that reminded me of a relaxing afternoon back when I was a kid in Naga. Classes were suspended that day because of a reported storm. But no heavy rain, strong winds, thunder and lightning came; just a light, continuous rain with that comfy chill in the air.
Last Friday's rain was exactly like that. The gentle sound of the falling raindrops became our background music, soothing us, as our teacher guided us into the last pose. I could feel the soft wind coming in from the windows. I could also hear the splashing of the water from the passing cars outside. And as I stare towards the ceiling, I imagined seeing the raindrops fall on the roof; slowly trickling down to the sides, going straight down the gutter. (Note to self: once i have a house of my own, I'll have a part of the roof made see-through!)
The whole atmosphere was serene and comforting but as i was lying down, I remembered that I have to go to Borders after yoga. My sister, who was going to pick me up, called me earlier and informed me that she'll be late. I decided that I'll just wait for her at the bookstore, which was five blocks away from the studio. I didn't mind walking in the rain but i still preferred walking with no form of precipitation falling down on me. Then suddenly, I don't know if I'm lucky or just really blessed but at the same moment that we said our "namaste," the rain stopped.
I immediately said goodbye to my teacher and classmates. I just cant' wait to go outside! But before leaving, i had a quick chit chat with Tom. I felt giddy at first coz I thought that he was Zinedine Zidane, the french football star. But when he introduced himself as "Tom," I was pretty bummed out. (Hahahaha!)
*This is Zinedine Zidane.

Instead of the usual yellow and orange horizon during sunset, gray clouds welcomed me as i went outside. It was not at all depressing but surely a nice change from the sunny weather I have been experiencing for a long time. I felt, as i was walking, that i was in this french movie. A romantic movie probably. Too bad Tom was not Zinedine Zidane, he could have been a great leading man. hahaha!
I arrived at the bookstore 20 mins after. It usually takes me around 10 minutes but i was super sloowww this time. I was taking in all the sights and smells of that afternoon. It was, however, the smell of coffee inside the store that made me love the rain more. It also made me buy books again! And it certainly made me nostalgic!
I never thought that I'd be this happy and sentimental to something as ordinary as rain. But well, as i have said earlier, not being able to experience rain for such a long time, it made a huge impact on me.
Hmmm..now i wonder how i would react when i finally get to see my friends in the Philippines again.
